Appalshop -- Appalachian Arts and Education Center

Appalshop (appalshop.org) is a non-profit multi-disciplinary arts and education center located in Whitesburg, Kentucky in the heart of Appalachia. Appalshop produces original films and video as well as theater, music and spoken-word recordings, radio, photography, multimedia, and books.

Begun in 1969 as an economic development project of the War on Poverty to teach young people in Appalachia media skills so that they could find employment outside of Appalachia. The focus soon changed. Instead of leaving the region, students used those skills to stay in the region and to begin making films to document their own communities from their own perspective.

Now Appalshop is a nationally recognized media center. Projects range "from documenting traditional arts to exploring history to dealing with the social issues that affect the region today. The underlying philosophy has always been that Appalachian people must tell their own stories and solve their own problems."
As stated on their website, "Appalshop is dedicated to the proposition that the world is immeasurably enriched when local cultures garner the resources, including new technologies, to tell their own stories and to listen to the unique stories of others. The creative acts of listening and telling are Appalshop's core competency."

Some significant Appalshop projects:

Buffalo Creek Flood: An Act of Man (1975)
Buffalo Creek Revisited (1984)

Both films, directed by Mimi Pickering. Buffalo Creek Flood: An Act of Man was added to the National Film Registry in 2005.

You can view films and videos online at the Appalshop Channel or purchase DVDs through the Appalshop General Store.
